Washington, D.C. – Two years ago, we launched Joining Forces, a nationwide campaign to rally all Americans to support our veterans and military families. We did this for two simple reasons: because we were both awed by the courage and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform who risk their lives every day to protect our values and keep us safe. We were also awed by their families, the spouses and children who serve right along with them, enduring deployment after deployment with grace and resolve.

As we traveled the country visiting bases and military communities, everywhere we went, we heard from veterans who had years of training and experience in the military — leading dozens, even hundreds of their peers; operating some of the most advanced technology; and solving complex problems under the most extreme conditions imaginable. But when they returned home, they struggled to find decent jobs. We met military spouses who’d spent decades moving from base to base every couple of years and struggled to maintain their careers. As the months passed, we saw that the unemployment rate for our most recent veterans remained far too high above the national average.

These men and women are some of the highest-skilled, best-trained, hardest-working people in this country. They are medics and engineers, drivers and welders, computer technicians and machinists. They are eager to work and determined to keep on serving this country. All they need is a chance.

But the challenge of giving them that chance is only becoming more urgent. In the coming years, more than a million servicemembers will be hanging up their uniforms and transitioning to civilian life. That’s on top of the hundreds of thousands of veterans and military spouses already out there looking for work.

That’s why, back in August of 2011, President Obama challenged the private sector to hire or train 100,000 veterans and military spouses by the end of 2013. And over the past two years, businesses across America have answered that call. By last August, they had already filled 125,000 jobs, with commitments to hire 250,000 more. And today, we are proud to announce that America’s businesses have hired or trained 290,000 veterans and military spouses, almost triple the original goal. In addition, companies like Wal-Mart, UPS, Home Depot, the Blackstone Group, Target, and McDonald’s have committed to hire or train another 435,000 veterans and military spouses over the next five years.

So we’re making real progress. We’re encouraged that the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans dropped by 2.2% in 2012. But it is still too high; because as long as any veteran or military spouse who needs a job is unable to find one, then we still have work to do.

That’s why, in his budget, President Obama proposed a permanent extension of the tax credits he signed into law for businesses that hire unemployed veterans and wounded warriors. We’ve also been working with governors and state legislators to revamp state laws to give our troops credit for the skills they’ve learned in the military when they apply for professional licenses and credentials here at home. In addition, we’ve created new partnerships between the armed forces and the manufacturing and information technology industries to ensure that our servicemembers are trained for good jobs.

But ultimately, it’s up to our companies to actually hire veterans for these jobs. So today, we need business leaders across this country to ask themselves, “What can my company do for these men and women who have served our country so bravely?” If you own a small business, can you commit to hiring a few veterans — or even just one? If you own a larger company, can you hire a few hundred — or a few thousand? Can you retrain the veterans already in your workforce so they can grow within your company? Can you team up with other businesses to hire the veterans in your communities?

This is an all-hands-on-deck issue, and we cannot rest until every single veteran and military spouse who is searching for a job has found one. These men and women have sacrificed so much for all of us. Now is the time for all of us to come together to serve them as well as they have served this country. Michelle Obama is First Lady of the U.S., and Dr. Jill Biden is Second Lady of the U.S.

He stopped by the preschool classrooms of Community Renewal Team’s (CRT) Heritage Child Development Center to take part in CRT’s Child Abuse Prevention Month “Reader Day.”

State representatives, police chiefs, officials and other volunteers fanned out to all 19 CRT classroom locations and read “My Body Belongs to Me,” an age-appropriate book that educators and caregivers use as a tool to help children understand inappropriate vs. appropriate touching. The readers also offered the children tips and lessons about what to do when uncomfortable situations arise.

CRT has observed April as Child Abuse Prevention Month since 2009 and incorporates activities and lessons for whole families throughout the month to help root out abuse in local communities. The effort this year also occurred during The Week of the Young Child which is an annual celebration sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). This year’s featured book “My Body Belongs to Me,” written by Jill Starishevsky, reinforces the idea that a child’s body is his or her own and not anyone else’s.

“Spending a little time with these children reading really helps share important messages with them about ways to future child abuse, and this can have a lasting impact on their lives,” said CRT’s Director of Early Care and Education Emilie Montgomery. “This event is just one day, but getting these dialogues going in our classrooms and communities leads to real progress on tough issues like child abuse.”

Starishevsky is an assistant district attorney in New York City, where she has prosecuted hundreds of sex offenders and dedicated a large portion of her career to seeking justice for victims of child abuse and sex crimes. According to her Website, Starishevsky’s mission to protect children, along with her penchant for poetry, inspired the book.

CRT enrolls more than 1,400 preschool-aged children in Head Start and Early Care and Education classrooms throughout Central Connecticut. CRT education programs go beyond traditional curricula to encompass parent outreach, nutrition programming, family case management and health screenings.

Lafayette, LA – Trial attorney Willie Gary along with actress Denise Boutte, recently served as Grand Marshalls of the 10th Annual African American History Parade in Lafayette, Louisiana. The parade, themed “Our Timeline – Our Progress,” was attended by nearly 20,000 people who lined the city streets hours in advance of the scheduled start time. Many came from near and far to honor the accomplishments of African American leaders and trailblazers. The parade was hosted by KJCB Radio in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Gary’s float was led through the city streets by the famed marching band from Southern University. Onlookers danced and cheered as the procession made its way through the crowd. Gary waved to attendees and threw prizes and trinkets to those showing the most enthusiasm. At the grandstand, Mayor Joey Durell of Lafayette, Louisiana presented Gary with a Key to the City for his humanitarian and philanthropic efforts.

Gary motivated the audience to overcome obstacles and to succeed against what may seem like insurmountable odds. “Many great men and women have made significant sacrifices and fought for civil rights. Today we celebrate those leaders and legends who have paved the way,” said Gary. “Thanks to their perseverance, the opportunities our grandparents only dreamed of having are accessible to all Americans,” continued Gary.

Gary, who is best known in legal circles as “The Giant Killer,” is noted for taking on some of America’s most powerful companies–winning billions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients. Known for his philanthropic endeavors, he and his wife, Gloria Gary, founded The Gary Foundation, which provides college scholarships to at-risk students who wish to attend college. The Gary’s have donated millions of dollars to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities – including $10 million pledge to their alma mater, Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Windosr Locks, CT – (Inquiring News – AP) – Fans waited patiently at Bradley Airport, at they arrived home with. Geno Auriemma has been chasing Pat Summitt since he started coaching. Now with his eighth national championship, he has finally caught her.

It might not be long before Auriemma stands alone with freshman Breanna Stewart leading the way.
Stewart scored 18 of her 23 points in a dazzling first half and Connecticut won its eighth NCAA title with a 93-60 rout of Louisville on Tuesday night. It was the most lopsided victory in a title game, and it put the Huskies back atop college basketball after missing the game the past two years.

The title tied Auriemma and the Huskies (35-4) with Summitt for the most in women’s basketball history. Unlike the Tennessee great, Auriemma has never lost a championship game in eight appearances.
”The only person I compare myself to is Pat Summitt and to be there in that spot with her means a lot to me,” Auriemma said. “The fact that I tied Pat Summitt’s record puts you in the category of the greatest women’s basketball coach that ever lived.”
